Well a couple of big big surprises in the results of the semi-final have just been announced from Helsinki. Many of the big favourties didn’t make it to the final on saturday night instead some less nice songs got the European votes, but I think that this year will prove that there is a very big difference on how the western part of Europe has voted compared to the eastern part of this continent. Many countries are very very disappointed about tonights results like Switzerland, Malta, Austria, Andorra and Denmark.
Of the 10 songs I predicted earlier today I did get 5 in the final. The biggest surprise most be Moldova and Hungary. None of them has been in any discussion, but I can understand Hungary since Magdi did a brilliant performance of her song and was one the best singers tonight. Moldova I can’t understand at all. I cry over Latvia, Georgia and Bulgaria since none of them really deserved to be in the final on saturday.
Once again Norway, Denmark and Iceland are out and need to go home and think about what kind of songs they select for this contest. I have never believed in Norway since it was to oldfashioned and boring and I proved right there and the same goes for Portugal. Two countries that really deserved to be in the final were Austria and Andorra but I think that those two did very well in western Europe but scored nothing in the eastern parts of Europe.
The 10 selected songs for the final on saturday is:
1. Belarus – Koldun – Work you magic
2. Macedonia – Karolina – Mojot svet
3. Slovenia – Alenka Gotar – Cvet z juga
4. Hungary – Magdi Ruzsa – Unsubstantial blues
5. Georgia – Sopho – Visionary dreams
6. Latvia – Bonaparte.lv - Questa Notte
7. Serbia – Marija Serifovic – Molitva
8. Bulgaria – Elitsa & Stoyan – Water
9. Turkey – Kenan Dogulu – Shake it up Shekerim
10. Moldova – Natalia Barbu – Fight
Time to sleep on this result and start thinking about saturdays final, who will be in and who will be out of the 24 songs. I’ll be back with more stuff tomorrow.
Good Night Europe

I agree that Bulgaria didn’t really deserve to be in the final; but sadly anything with ethnic-flavored drumming (even if it’s artificial and not very good) seems to do well these days. I guess it’s something that’s easy to understand.
Georgia had a ESC type of vibe to the song, and I predicted it might go through. It’s classical ESC stuff without being overly obviously so, so I had a feeling it might get votes.
Hungary is my favorite even if I have a feeling it will proably not do well in the final. I felt as though it was the only professional act and the only moment during the show that I felt that I was watching a high quality show. And it really irks me when people say it’s a blues song because it isn’t.
Denmark left me really cold. A lot of hype. Little content, little fun. It wasn’t shocking or funny. Just boring.
Israel was pretty funny and there was a serious message behind the silliness, too. I would have liked to have seen them go through.
LOVED Serbia. Very touching. My second favorite.
Liked Andorra, too. They should have gone through.
Belarus… Totally deserved their place in the final. Loved the James Bondesque vibe. Could have done with a less cheezy chorus, but not too bad.
Switzerland, again, great coreography, some great orchestral stuff. But, after the great intro the cheezy drum machine anti-climax is brought in and the song proves to be a HUGE letdown. DJ Bobo’s singing was downright horrible, too. Had he kept his mouth shut, the song might have been somewhat enjoyable. But all in all I felt like I was eating a ready-made meal with carefully calculated ingredients and I didn’t like the taste.
Malta I think didn’t perform too well. She was out of tune so badly at times that it hurt. I really liked the lyrics, though.
Austria had a great video, but for some reason I didn’t like the song nearly as much live on stage. The voice wasn’t as powerful, and the performance lacked something that I couldn’t really put my finger on. I would have still had them go through rather than Bulgaria.
Felt the same way about Moldova. The singer was really, really good, but didn’t work half as well live as on the video. Still OK. The song is also a little unimaginative.
Slovenia… Something different. I kind of liked it, but I don’t think it has much chance in the final.
Turkey… The performance was a bit lacking, but I like the song. If he sharpens the singing in the final, it can be a strong final contender. But could go any way, really.
Latvia was OK, too. I probably liked it because it lacked the cheezy drum machine that almost everyone had.
Macedonia had some rhythmic trickery going for it. Otherwise traditional ESC stuff. Nothing spectacular but not bad either. I doubt we’ll see it in the final 5 but who knows.
